Sea Horse Cottage is simple in style, with just enough mod cons (air-con, DVD and CD players) to make your stay comfortable. But it’s what lies outside that counts. The property is right on a pebble beach, backed with trees — all you need do is step off the verandah.

Nearby, the tiny harbour town of Steni Vala has a handful of tavernas, but nobody comes to Alonissos for the nightlife. This is a place for swimming, relaxing and a small mountain of good books.

The cottage has one bedroom which sleeps two adults, an open plan sitting room and kitchen leading to verandah and a bathroom with shower. Car hire is included as the cottages enjoys a secluded location. 

Early booking is advisable, other individual cottages are also available.

The Istron Bay Hotel has a stunning location directly above one of the most beautiful bays in this part of Crete and is a mile north of Istron village. It has 145 rooms, some interconnecting. Rooms available include Standard, superior and junior suites - all have a balcony or terrace with seaview.

The main building houses reception, main restaurant, lounge, bar and terrace. The large 340 sq m pool below is seawater and has lush garden terrace surrounds and a snack bar. The long sand-pebble beach, reached by a number of steps, has sunbeds, watersports, a daytime taverna and beach bar, and an evening à la carte restaurant.

Elsewhere the hotel has a floodlit tennis court, a diving school, a mini-club for children ages 4-11, and provides plenty of activities for older children and adults. In the evenings there is often some form of entertainment too.

Villa Penny offers the highest standards and fantastic views, not to mention one of the friendliest owners we have come across, the hospitable Dimitris. 

Villa Penny is located on a hill across the road from well-known Lemonakia beach, a 15 minute walk from Kokkari. The freshwater pool measures 60 sq m  and is only for the five apartments here. It also has a children’s section.

Popular white-pebble Lemonakia Beach, quickly reached in under 5 minutes via a short cut down the hill, has two good tavernas. Of course a much wider choice can be found in Kokkari a 15 minute walk away. Due to the location, this property would not be suitable to anyone with walking difficulties.

There are four 1 bedroom apartments (sleeps up to 4) and one 2 bedroom apartment (sleeps up to 6) here - great for families. All units have been tastefully furnished and decorated. Each apartment has a wide front terrace affording lovely views over Lemonakia in one direction and Kokkari in the other.

The friendly family-run Villa Zoe Hotel is at the small seaside resort of Yialova 6 kms north of Pylos and only a kilometre from the edge of the important nature reserve here, which is well known for its birdlife.   It enjoys a quiet location just across from the long sandy beach here. Flowers, trees and shrubs add colour and plenty of shade and breakfast can be taken under the palm trees.  

The Villa Zoe Hotel has 30 rooms furnished in typically simple style (pine), all air-conditioned with ensuite shower/wc, the majority offer a balcony and some view of the sea.   The ground floor houses a good restaurant serving Greek specialities – in keeping with the overall philosophy here much of the food is organic. Behind the hotel is a new freshwater swimming pool. 

The Zoe owners are very active in wildlife preservation. and guided nature trail walks through the reserve take place from the hotel.

Although simple, for a relaxing seaside location and a warm Greek atmosphere, Villa Zoe is ideal.

This romantically named hotel is rather special. It is in Tsangarada, just to one side of the famous main square and church. The building dates from c.1890 and it was actually the first hotel in Pelion. With much antique furniture it is quite unique.  

The hotel has only 8 rooms on the upper two floors. All have modern ensuite bathrooms, a television and a balcony or roof terrace. Most are double-bedded. All rooms have individual decor and furnishings.

The ground floor lounge attracts many curious Greek visitors for its antique curios and decor, and the library has the air of an English country house.  Outside there is a delightful terrace where you may take breakfast, a champagne brunch, an evening meal or simply relax with a drink.

A car is included because, although Tsangarada has some good local tavernas, this is an idyllic base from which to explore the Pelion. The nearest beach is much-photographed Milopotamos, a 10 minute drive down the mountain.
