Off the West coast of mainland Greece lie the Ionian Islands. The Ionian landscape is a rich green of olive, pine and cypress and there is much evidence of Anglo-venetian architecture in Ionian churches, castles and houses.

Corfu
Corfu remains one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean. This, the most northerly of the Ionian Islands is the greenest of them all - and with over 200kms of coastline, the island really can offer something for everyone. Corfu Town is different from other Greek towns, having a rich architectural and cultural history. Sophisticated shops, art exhibitions, orchestras, bands and bouzouki enliven the scene; - there is a lot to see and do.

Paxos
Silvery Paxos is the smallest of the Ionian islands. It is very pretty, wonderful for walking and is lapped by the clearest of seas. There are over 30 beaches to choose from; most are small and of white pebbles which shelve gently into crystalline waters. Being so small and such gentle wooded country, Paxos is a paradise for walking – particularly in the spring or early summer when countless varieties of wild flowers bloom. It is small enough to walk the length of in a day, and criss-crossed with hundreds of paths and tracks.

Lefkas
Lefkas, also known as Lefkada, is linked to the mainland by a bridge combining a true island atmosphere with access by car to the delights of the mainland Epirus region. The east cost of Lefkas is sheltered and pretty, with pine and olive trees to the waters edge. The west coast is very different - rugged and open with sheer white cliffs and some fabulous beaches. There is plenty to do on Lefkas. A comprehensive excursion programme includes boat trips to Kefalonia and Ithaca, and the famous beach of Porto Katsiki. You can also rent a mountain bike or a small motor boat.

Kefalonia
Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian group of islands. It is an island that rewards exploration many times over with its dramatic scenery, distinctive traditions, fine beaches, and unspoiled way of life. The sheer variety Kefalonia offers the visitor is one reason why so many return. There is so much to see on the island that car hire is almost essential as the local bus services are limited.

Ithaca
Ithaca is little visited and
sleepy. It is Ithaca's distinct lack of mainstream tourism, coupled with its
mythological past which makes it an island so worth visiting. Was Ithaca really
the homeland of Odysseus? Few people ever come to stay here. For those that do,
their reward is a peaceful, strongly traditional Greek island, mountainous and
scenic, with some very pretty villages and sparsely populated beaches.

Zakynthos
Zakynthos, also called Zante, lies to the south of Kefalonia and enjoys a superb and temperate climate. Measuring some 19 kms by 38 kms, it is a lush fertile island, given largely to agriculture and an unhurried rural way of life.
The south of the island has some excellent sandy beaches. Much of it has been designated a protected marine park as it is the favoured Mediterranean nesting ground of the endangered Loggerhead turtle.
